Athlete In The Spotlight: Emily Marsh

December 02, 2015 by Ryan in Blog, Fitness, Inspiration, Uncategorized
One of the hardest working athlete’s here at O.B. Training & Sports Performance is one of our high school hockey players.  In fact, this season is their first season playing high school hockey.  No, not because they weren’t old enough or didn’t make the team last year but rather because this is the first year that our area has a women’s high school ice hockey team.  O.B. Training athlete Emily Marsh is not only one of the hardest working athletes we have but also one of the first girls in the area to get a chance to play ice hockey for a local high school.  That may not mean much to some of you but I don’t think you realize how huge that is for the girls that play ice hockey in the area (and the parents of course).  You see, women’s ice hockey is obviously not as popular as mens ice hockey which means less teams, less opportunity, greater distances to travel, last pick for ice time, bottom of the paper for news coverage, smaller crowds….I think you get the point.  The thing that will amaze you is that to Emily and the rest of the women’s ice hockey players – none of that matters.  That’s how much they love the game.  They travel all over just about every weekend to play the game they love.  Practice at 10:00 PM? No big deal.  Travel 4 hours to a game? No big deal.  Workout then go to practice? No big deal.  To Emily that’s just what she has to do to play hockey.  On top of that, whether she is in-season or out of season, each week she is here working out.  She demonstrates hard work, dedication and more importantly character – doing the work even when no one is watching.  These are the reasons why she is this month’s Athlete In The Spotlight.

Q:  Tell us a little about yourself.

A:  I’m 15 and a sophomore at Whitesboro High School. My favorite subjects are math and science. I play Ice Hockey for the Clinton Lady Warriors and the CNY Bobcats. I also play lacrosse for my school, the Whitesboro Warriors. I really want to play hockey at RIT or Clarkson University while I study to become an engineer.

Q:  How long have you been training at O.B. Training & Sports Performance?

A:  My first 3 months were during the summer of 2014. Then I took the winter off for the hockey season, and started again this past June. So far I’ve been coming 2 to 3 days a week for 7 months and counting.

Q:  How has training at O.B. Training & Sports Performance helped you become a better athlete?

A:  O.B. has had a huge impact on my athletic ability. I’ve become so much faster, stronger, and my endurance is so much better. Without training here I never would have been able to make the varsity hockey team. My coaches even told me I’m one of the strongest players on the team. I owe it all to my training.

Q:  What’s your favorite and least favorite exercise?

A:  I love sled sprints, if that counts as an exercise. My least favorite would have to be split-squat jumps. Those are just awful.

Q:  How has training at O.B. Training changed you as an athlete?

A:  My view on exercise has definitely changed. I look forward to coming each and every week, there’s never been a day where I dread going to O.B.  If anything, it brightens my mood. I have so much more fun working out, and I constantly strive to be stronger. It’s like an addiction.

Q:  What’s your favorite cartoon character and why?

A:  Scooby-doo, hands down. He’s a talking dog that solves mysteries and likes to eat. How can you not like him?

Q:  Who is your favorite professional athlete?

A:  Meghan Duggan, captain of the U.S. Women’s ice hockey team. I met her at a camp one time, and she’s the most funny and down-to-earth person you’ll meet. Her passion for hockey is so obvious and she’s just the type of player everybody wants to be.

Q:  What superhero would you compare yourself to?

A:  Batman. He’s got no real powers, he works to be great.

Q:  Would you rather only be able to listen to Lady Gaga songs OR reread all 56 pages of ITunes terms and conditions, every day for the rest of your life?

A:  Listen to Lady Gaga. She’s not the worst artist in the world.

Q:  If you could only eat one food all day every day what would it be?

A:  Chicken. I never grew out of the chicken tender phase like my mom always hoped I would. I’m eating a crispy chicken sub right now actually.
