[Coach Ari] The Importance of Hip Mobility and Core Strength for Golfers

by Ryan in Blog, Fitness, Nutrition 0 comments tags: athlete, become the athlete within, exercise, fitness, golf, performance, sport
The execution of the golf swing is a “feet to fingertips” athletic action- the entire kinetic chain is utilized. In order to perform proper movement throughout the golf swing requires certain levels of joint mobility and core stabilization. If certain joints (i.e. hips) are limited in terms of mobility or certain parts of the body are “weak”, executing an efficient swing without compensating form will be very difficult. The hips are a necessary joint in the golf swing. That said, if limitations are present in terms of mobility the body will compensate proper form which leads to trouble down the road. Both on the scorecard, and your long term back health. For example- the last golf lesson, or “tune-up”, I had approximately two months ago was because of that exact reason. My body wasn’t moving properly in the backswing because of poor hip mobility, and in turn that caused me to have a flawed swing with lost yardage and accuracy. Looking from a spectators point of view at normal speed, you would never be able to tell there was any sort of mobility issue. In fact I got compliments of how great my swing looked. But I felt that something […]

When it comes to fitness, GOALS are a huge part of making your journey here worthwhile.  Yes, some people are “fitness junkies” and just like to exercise.  Most often though there is some type reason or goal for why one starts to exercise. Conversations with our new members generally start off with  “I want to (Insert Goal Here)”   As coaches, it is our job to provide you with the tools and the guidance to help you achieve your goals.  The most important tip I can provide someone as a coach is to always have a goal.  Not having a goal is like driving with no destination.  If you don’t know where you are going, how can you ever get there?   Here are 5 Easy Steps for achieving your goals Set a Goal (Target) Make it real – Your goal should be S.M.A.R.T. – Specific-Measurable-Attainable -Realistic-Timely Create a Plan (Map to reach your Target) In order to reach your goal you have to have a plan of how to get there.  This is where coaching becomes crucial.  Everyone needs a coach – EVERYONE.  Look at the most successful people in the world and I would guarantee that they have […]

Educating the Youth

by Ryan in Blog, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: become the athlete within, exercise, new hartford, obtraining, performance, sports, strength and conditioning, utica
A few weeks ago, the O.B. Training coaches had the opportunity to speak during the physical education classes at New Hartford High School. Ryan and I being alumni of New Hartford thought this would be a great opportunity for current students to see what past students are doing now. As a way to make the presentation engaging and interactive for students, we brought The Functional Movement Screen. This screen goes through 7 basic movement patterns and addresses asymmetries within the body. By having the students perform these movements, it gave us an opportunity to go through some common mistakes that many athletes bring into the gym. Often times students that are new to weight training are unsupervised or just copying something they’ve seen in a magazine. This can result in major mistakes when it comes to movement quality and these mistakes can lead to serious injury.       The beauty of the Functional Movement Screen is its’ ability to objectively look at and score the movement quality for a population of athletes. This score allows our coaches to measure the potential risk for future injury.   It is important to instill the idea of health and physical fitness at […]

Expertise + Encouragement = Success She credits the expertise and consistent encouragement of O.B.’s coaches with giving her the tools she needs to succeed. “I’m a step ahead in the next phase of my athletics because of O.B.,” Emily said. “They’ve given me the techniques, the motivation and the ability to succeed in a short period of time.” Become the athlete within No matter your goal, level of fitness or athletic ability, O.B.’s coaches can help you to become the athlete within. Athlete In The Spotlight: Michael Johnson of Notre Dame Junior-Senior High School

by Ryan in Fitness, Inspiration, Strength, Training, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: athlete, become the athlete within, fitness, ny, obtraining, performance, sports, strength and conditioning, utica
Name: Michael Johnson Alias: Magic Mike Age: 16 School: Notre Dame Junior-Senior High School Sport: Varsity baseball Mike Johnson joined the O.B.  Training & Sports Performance family in August and began training with our expert coaches Ryan Obernesser and Christina D’Amico. Mike’s competitive spirit has impressed us, but it’s his good-natured attitude that makes him stand out.  Mike often is caught doing the “shmoney” dance while on a glute ham raise or singing Backstreet Boys or Ace of Base ballads. When he’s not dancing or singing, he’s challenging coach Ryan to a wrestling match.  Mike is a key component of the O.B. Training & Sports Performance family, and we wouldn’t know what to do without him. Here’s what Mike had to say during a break from singing and dancing: O.B.: You’re currently on the Notre Dame High School varsity baseball team. Do you remember when you first started playing baseball? Mike: I’ve been playing since I was 5 years old. O.B.: How has training at O.B. Training & Sports Performance helped you become a better athlete? Mike: O.B Training has helped increase my speed and strength immensely and also given me a better work ethic both in and out of training. O.B.: What […]

Creating good habits vs. Breaking bad ones

by Ryan in Uncategorized 0 comments tags: athlete, become the athlete within, obtraining, performance, sports, strength and conditioning, utica
I was working with an Adult client yesterday who is in his early 30’s and suffers from a variety of issues, most of which stem from bad habits in posture and exercise. Most of our time during each session is spent re-learning specific movement patterns and establishing habits for good posture throughout the day. As someone who is very active, quite strong, and INTENSE to put it lightly, this “easy” workout program is hard to stomach. During our session he made a comment that to me was profound, he said “Do you mean to tell me that if I learned how to exercise properly when I played sports in high school I wouldn’t have all of these problems today?” Now while I can’t say that all of the problems wouldn’t exist, I can assure you that all of the bad habits developed over the years wouldn’t.   This really made me think about the kids we work with and how much easier it is to establish a good habit than it is to break a bad one. My second major in college was Psychology and throughout that curriculum I took classes in addiction and psychopahrmacaology. When looking at addiction from a […]

Optimizing spinal alignment to increase power and decrease pain

by Ryan in Fitness, Strength, Training, Uncategorized, Workouts 0 comments tags: athlete, become the athlete within, obtraining, performance, posture, power, sports, strength and conditioning, utica
So what does it mean to optimize spinal alignment and how can that help you generate more power and decrease pain? It’s actually quite simple and can be very effective when implemented properly. First, lets talk about spinal alignment.  As you know our spines have a specific curvature to them; some curve more than others but generally it is a slight S curve.  The curvature of your spine or alignment of the spine is a product of individual growth and development as well as your daily habits and posture.  If you look at the image above you will see a “neutral” spinal alignment on the left and some different curvatures as you scan right.  The two most common postural issues we see are excessive “lordosis” (Arching of the lower back) and ‘Kyphosis” (Hunch back look in the upper back) or a combination of the two.  For us, a neutral spinal alignment would be considered the optimal position. So what does this mean for pain and power? Pain – When exercising, especially when lifting weights overhead or holding weights on your back, excessive arching in the lower and upper back will create sheer forces on the spine resulting in a great […]
