[Coach Joe] If I Were The Last Person On Earth

by Ryan in Blog, Inspiration 0 comments tags: fitness, new hartford personal trainer, performance, personal training, sports, training, utica personal trainer
“If I were the last person on earth, would I still do what I do?” This is a question posed by Steven Pressfield in his book The War of Art.  In itself it is a simple yes or no answer, however when we delve a little deeper is when things get interesting. Apply this situation to anything in your life to quickly sort through what is important to you and what isn’t.  If you care about an activity enough to continue doing it even though no one else exists you can say with certainty that it matters. For me, after going to undergrad and graduate school for a business degree it only made sense to get a job in the business industry.  However if the world were to come to some sort of doomsday apocalypse I know for a fact that I would not be drawing up SWOT analyses or go-to-market strategies for imaginary businesses. I WOULD however continue to pursue different fitness endeavors and experiment to see what works best for my body.  This is one of the main reasons I am so sure that I was meant to be in this line of work. So your homework is […]

Athlete In The Spotlight: Jamarious Morgan

by Ryan in Blog, Inspiration, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: Football, obtraining, performance, Proctor, speed, sports, training, utica
Every so often you come across an athlete that is special.  You can’t really put your finger on it but something about them is just special. Well when Jamarious Morgan walked through our doors this past summer we knew immediately he was special.  He is a soft-spoken, polite, hard working, extremely talented young man.  He always shows up on time ready to work and even though he may not always feel like it, he puts in the work.  His superhero comparison is on point.  He’s lighting fast like The Flash and impressively strong like Superman.  On the football field, it’s amazing to see the way his body bends and moves as he breaks tackle after tackle on his way to the end zone.  The athletic abilities that he displays are quite simply amazing.  That combined with his warming personality and witty jokes makes him a pleasure to coach and this month’s Athlete In The Spotlight. Q: Tell us a little about yourself. A: My name is Jamarious Morgan, I am a running back on the football team at Utica Proctor.  I also run track, play lacrosse and I love to compete. Q: How long have you been training at O.B. […]

Am I Overtraining?

by Ryan in Blog, Fitness, Tips, Training, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: obtraining, overtraining, performance, recovery, rest, sports, training
There are two general parts to training; Work + Rest. Most people focus more on the work side and neglect to pay any attention to rest. Training is where you stimulate your gains; however, resting is where your body has a chance to build itself back up. Every single training session adds stress to our bodies. Our bodies already carry stress due to our everyday lives, due to job demand and family obligations etc. Training is a great outlet or stress reliever for most, myself included.  However, the point that needs to be looked at is whether exercise adding more stress to our already stressed out systems or is it removing it? The best way to ensure that you’re not adding extra stress to your body is to incorporate appropriate rest into your daily routine. As coaches, we need to keep a close eye on clients who present the early symptom of overtraining. These symptoms, which may appear mild at first, will include; slight pain in the shoulder, knee, ankle or back. Also, trouble sleeping, irritability and a decrease in performance are other common side effects to overtraining. Training should make you feel great! Not run down! If you’re feeling drained […]

Are You Getting Quality Sleep?

by Ryan in Tips, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: obtraining, performance, recovery, rest, sleep, sports, utica
I feel it’s safe to say that we all have experienced some form of sleep deprivation in some point in our life. Sleep deprivation can negatively affect sex hormones, insulin sensitivity, immune regulation and neuro-cognitive performance, just to name a few. Many of us deal with a sleep related issues on a daily basis and still carry on with their existence. The quality of sleep that you are able to achieve each night is far more important than the quantity of sleep. Each individual is different in that each require their own amount of rest each evening to stay efficient. Some people may only require 6 hrs, where other may need a 8-10 hr fix. Uninterrupted quality sleep will provides us with a chance to repair and re-energize our bodies to prepare us for the challenges of the following day. However, a lack in this quality sleep will only lead to constant fatigue, over eating and over use of stimulants, fat gain and lack of enjoyment in everyday life. Waking up during the night to use the bathroom is a sign of some imbalances that might be going on in your body. 10-1am – Poor blood sugar management – You […]

When it comes to fitness, GOALS are a huge part of making your journey here worthwhile.  Yes, some people are “fitness junkies” and just like to exercise.  Most often though there is some type reason or goal for why one starts to exercise. Conversations with our new members generally start off with  “I want to (Insert Goal Here)”   As coaches, it is our job to provide you with the tools and the guidance to help you achieve your goals.  The most important tip I can provide someone as a coach is to always have a goal.  Not having a goal is like driving with no destination.  If you don’t know where you are going, how can you ever get there?   Here are 5 Easy Steps for achieving your goals Set a Goal (Target) Make it real – Your goal should be S.M.A.R.T. – Specific-Measurable-Attainable -Realistic-Timely Create a Plan (Map to reach your Target) In order to reach your goal you have to have a plan of how to get there.  This is where coaching becomes crucial.  Everyone needs a coach – EVERYONE.  Look at the most successful people in the world and I would guarantee that they have […]

Educating the Youth

by Ryan in Blog, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: become the athlete within, exercise, new hartford, obtraining, performance, sports, strength and conditioning, utica
A few weeks ago, the O.B. Training coaches had the opportunity to speak during the physical education classes at New Hartford High School. Ryan and I being alumni of New Hartford thought this would be a great opportunity for current students to see what past students are doing now. As a way to make the presentation engaging and interactive for students, we brought The Functional Movement Screen. This screen goes through 7 basic movement patterns and addresses asymmetries within the body. By having the students perform these movements, it gave us an opportunity to go through some common mistakes that many athletes bring into the gym. Often times students that are new to weight training are unsupervised or just copying something they’ve seen in a magazine. This can result in major mistakes when it comes to movement quality and these mistakes can lead to serious injury.       The beauty of the Functional Movement Screen is its’ ability to objectively look at and score the movement quality for a population of athletes. This score allows our coaches to measure the potential risk for future injury.   It is important to instill the idea of health and physical fitness at […]

Quick – Increase your speed with these five tips

by Ryan in Blog, Fitness, Strength, Tips, Training, Uncategorized 0 comments tags: agility, athlete, athletic, fitness, herkimer county, ny, oneida county, performance, personal training, speed, sports, training, utica
Athletic training and sports performance isn’t just about building strength and power. Elite athletes have strength, power and speed – and they work hard to be top notch in all three. Reaching your top speed requires hard work, but including these five tips from our expert coaches at O.B. Training can speed up your speed results. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN: Obvious, right? Not exactly. Most athletes have never actually run as fast as they can. Run full speed with every sprint and you’ll automatically increase your speed. BUILD YOUR LEG STRENGTH: Stronger legs means more force can be applied to the ground. More force into the ground equals faster movement. JUMP AROUND: Jumping and other plyometric movements help to develop the fast-twitch muscle fibers in your lower body needed for explosive movements, such as sprinting. STAY OFF YOUR HEELS: Running heel-to-toe causes the heel to hit the ground decreasing speed. Instead, stay on the balls of your feet and push the ground behind you. LOSE THE FAT: A leaner athlete is a faster athlete. It’s that simple.  Extra baggage slows you down.  Get leaner. Get Faster. Looking for more quick tips? Contact us today.

by Ryan in Blog, Fitness, Inspiration, Strength, Training, Uncategorized, Workouts 0 comments tags: athlete, become the athlete within, ny, obtraining, performance, power, sports, strength and conditioning, utica
When 17-year-old Emily Acquaviva of New Hartford learned she’d be playing softball for Division 1 college team Stony Brook University, she knew she needed to build a foundation of strength to compete at the college level. A teammate recommended Christina D’Amico and Ryan Obernesser at O.B. Training & Sports Performance. Emily began working with Christina and Ryan who customized a program for her to build her strength and muscle mass. “They’ve made me strong, which is something I didn’t used to be,” said Emily, who added she now is hang cleaning 100 pounds, squatting 140 pounds and is more than halfway to her goal of gaining 10 pounds of muscle. Expertise + Encouragement = Success She credits the expertise and consistent encouragement of O.B.’s coaches with giving her the tools she needs to succeed. “I’m a step ahead in the next phase of my athletics because of O.B.,” Emily said. “They’ve given me the techniques, the motivation and the ability to succeed in a short period of time.” Become the athlete within No matter your goal, level of fitness or athletic ability, O.B.’s coaches can help you to become the athlete within. Contact us today. In Emily’s own words O.B.: What […]
